Sad face

Had a good meal in the pub last night after Kevin bought new boots. He wondered why his feet were much wetter than ours then, yesterday, his boots fell apart.  So much for Swiss quality hey Kev?

After a couple of glasses of Pinot I was ready for an early (very early) bed, despite only having walked 4 miles along the canal - though it was the Rochdale canal, so has to rank much higher!

I was woken in the night by an owl trying to perch on the rim of my sash window. He managed it with wings outstretched, one on the upper part and one on the lower part of the window! Though he did not stay for long.

I leave the terrible twosome today and travel home on the train ready for Australia. However....... because I travelled on the transport with our 3 pieces of luggage, at the pub last night Julia was overheard to say "four old bags went on the bus today"!!!!!  As my Dad would have said...... Less of the "old" and 'You can go off people' and no digs about the owl looking for an old bat for his supper either!!!

Enjoy the rest of your walk guys. Looks like I had the best of the weather😀

Day 3

So far

We had a really good start to the Pennine Way. The rain which was forecast for all day on both days turned out to be 2 light showers on day one. The scenery and views were outstanding. A few signposts would have been nice but still better than some other paths we have been on. We saw several young red grouse on Bleaklow, which was a welcome boost on a dreary part of the path. The last 2 miles of day one were horrendous - down a steep, narrow gully filled with rocks. Ankle twisting terrain at the end of a long day and tired legs.

Day 2, which was supposed to be 11 miles, turned into about 14 with some nasty, boggy parts to it. There were some spectacular views and not a few reservoirs.  Although we did encounter some boggy bits, we were extremely grateful for the flagstone paved bits over the worst bogs which would have been a nightmare without them.

Our first 2 nights of B and B were at Torside with a tiny attic room with a double and one single bed, though it was light, clean and had very comfy beds.  Last night the rooms were larger but rather dark. They had advertised "a pub for evening meals 100 yards away" which turned out not to serve food on a Monday night, so we had to get a taxi to one about 3 miles away.  They also said they were half a mile from the walk, a half mile which turned into at least 1.5!  However it was nice to see the entrance to the very long rail and canal tunnels near Diggle.

Disappointment

Due to a very sore knee last night, I decided to be sensible for once and skip today's walk.  J and K left at 7:15 and I am still waiting for transport at 10:30. ☹️

Day 2

Yesterday was a difficult day with Jacob's Ladder then a long climb at the start. The flagstone paving helped me gather a bit of speed but the descent through s steep, rocky gully was slow going at the end of a long day with tired legs. J and K were, as always, brilliant and helped me along. A good meal in the pub and we were all ready for bed by 8:30.  I managed to slip and ended up with a muddy derier- though Kevin was involved!!!

Our first B and B at Torside is very nice with great views. We were all asleep by 7:30 last night after very long days! Overcast with rain forecast for later ..... Jacob'/s Ladder and Kinder Scout here we come.

Getting Ready

Time is drawing on and I need to start organising my packing. Daily distances and bookings for B&Bs was completed months ago, train tickets bought and all that is left is to assemble clothes and pack.....this is complicated somewhat by only having 3 hours at home between getting back from the Pennine Way and setting off for Australia for 3 weeks!!!

I am due to meet J and K in Manchester Piccadilly on Saturday afternoon and our first day's walk is from Edale to Torside, about 15 miles. No evening meal at Torside, so have to get a taxi to the pub 3 miles away.

I hope to post photos once we get started!
